Tây Phương Pagoda is located in Yên village, Thạch Thất district, Hà Tây Province, some 37 kilometres from Hà Nội and just six kilometers from Thầy (Thiên Phúc) Pagoda. There has been a pagoda at the site since the 6th century but it developed its present form in 1636 when it was rebuilt according to the shape of the Chinese character 三 (three), featuring three sections - the upper sanctuary, the rear palace and lobby rooms. The pagoda was completely rebuilt in 1794. Today it preserves some 80 wooden sculptures including several sculptural masterpieces. It also houses a bell cast in 1796 and many valuable altars of the Posterior Lê kings.

The gap between second-hand experience through class lectures and first-hand experience through real-life exposure is reported to be the crucial limitation of the VNU (Hanoi) Vietnamese language-learning programme for foreign students. This study, as the earliest bird in addressing this issue, investigated the merits of culture field trips (CFTs) to Dinh Bang village for foreign students studying Vietnamese in VNU, Hanoi and advocated this extra-curriculum activity to the VNU (Hanoi) Vietnamese language-learning course for foreigners. “Thick and rich” data collected from all the involved subjects: the students, teachers and Dinh Bang local people, were obtained by means of survey questionnaire and semi-structure interviews. The corresponding analysis revealed the a strong consensus among the teachers and students about the benefits of CFTs to Dinh Bang village for the students’ language and culture learning process, and the great support for this activity from Dinh Bang local people and authorities, which, in turn, consolidated the distinguished value and feasibility of the researchers’ proposal. The applicability of the study is further enhanced when one sample culture field trip to Dinh Bang village for the foreign students learning Vietnamese is also included.

Situated on the dike south of the Duong River in Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province is But Thap (pen stupa), one of the finest pagodas in the country's north and known as Vietnam's first Buddhist center. The pagoda was built under the dynasty of King Tran Thanh Tong (1258-1278) and rebuilt in 1647 in the Le Dynasty by Chinese Zen Buddhist priest Zhus Zhus, known as Chuyet Chuyet in Vietnamese. Legend has it that when leaving his former pagoda on the northern bank of the Duong River, priest Chuyet Chuyet saw a flock of flying swallows suddenly swooping down and perching on the ground on the southern bank, he decided to rebuild the pagoda there and named it Ninh Phuc Tu, which means peace and bless.
